BIOGRAPHY
Aphra Shemza is a new media artist exploring the impact and legacy of technology in our world. As an artist and activist, her work ignites conversation and seeks to find solutions for sustainable creative practice.
As a new media artist, she works with abstraction, interactivity and light. She uses traditional sculpting techniques, working with wood and plastic and combine them with the latest technology to create her work. Shemza has created public and private commissions: this year with Save the Children, last year Morley College and in 2016 with Champagne Louis Roederer which was launched in the Shard. She also regularly exhibit, recent highlights include: V&A Digital Design Weekend, Winter Lights Festival and Xi’an Maker Faire with the British Council.
Alongside creating new media work, she is a researcher exploring how artists working with technology can integrate sustainable practice to safeguard our environment and the longevity of our resources. Earlier this year she launched www.art-ology.co.uk a peer resource for artists who wish to be mindful of their environmental impact with the support of SPACE.
She has been invited to contribute in public speaking events, notably at Tate Britain and The Courtauld Institute. Shemza was also was published in Tate Etc and her research about sustainability in the media arts has been published in two academic papers which were presented at the Electronic Visual Arts conference in London.
In 2016 Shemza co-founded FLUX Events, a media artist peer networking charity who host panel discussions and exhibitions. She curates events with FLUX including events around sustainability in the media arts.
