: PROJECT’S TITLE

BILLIE (THE UNICORN)

ARTIST: Sugarfox
CREATION TIME: 2019
MEASUREMENTS: HEIGHT: 22.5” LENGTH: 25.5” DEPTH: 3.5”
DESCRIPTION: This piece was inspired by billie eilish. I really wanted to make a unicorn (which is typically a very girly form) and turn it on it’s head. The colors are my favorite part about this piece, black with bright pops of fluorescent green and sparkly teal. The majority of her neck and head are made with plastics. Paying homage to that girly aspect of the piece, false eyelashes and hair extensions were used on her eyes and mane.

BIOGRAPHY

My name is Stephanie Hongo and I am an artist based out of the us in Connecticut. I have been creating art for the majority of my life, but it wasn’t until i began making my trash pieces that I really felt inspired to create art for art’s sake. I come from a family of creators of all kinds, from carpentry to typography we all have an ability to “make things”. This broad range of ability and influence was a big factor in developing my own brand of creativity.
This all began in 2017 out of necessity. I had been working as a sign maker at a grocery store for years, and I was becoming increasingly unhappy with what i was doing and where I was working. As any artist knows it is quite difficult to find jobs in the field, and the lack of options forced me to quit my position without anything to fall back on. My goal then became to try making a living strictly off freelance art. The first problem here became buying supplies. Without a job to fund the material costs I couldn’t realistically see this plan moving forward. The realization that I could use trash truly just came to me all at once. It is in surplus, it is free, it comes in every imaginable shape/size, and using it as my base building material can benefit to our planet. I started making my creations and haven’t looked back since. This is the single most important landmark of my life so far, and I intend to follow the work wherever it takes me.
I do all the work on my pieces out of my home. The studio I have created for myself is always fully stocked with a mountain of trash and recyclables donated from friends, family, and individuals in my community. There is far too much waste generated in the world. I want to do my small part in helping eliminate some of that waste, while in turn making beautiful and unique works of art.
